The University of Toronto is launching an anti-Asian racism task force, with student participation, to tackle the issue and make it "more inclusive and welcoming" to members of Asian communities.
The group's plan includes consulting with students, faculty and other members of the wider university community, asking them to share their experiences of anti-Asian racism on campus.
“We would like to seek their recommendations on how to foster a more inclusive and respectful environment for members of the Asian community,” a University of Toronto spokesperson told The PIE News.
“The consultation strategy will include using surveys, focus groups and interviews to connect with as many people as possible,” they explained.

A report will be written recommending “concrete steps” to address anti-Asian racism on the institution's campuses, as well as documenting the experiences gathered during the discussion phase with the university community.
“[It] will include recommendations shared by members of the university community, data on Asian representation among students, faculty and staff as well as existing research and leading practices to address anti-Asian racism” , explained the spokesperson.
A plan to develop a “tri-campus inventory of existing resources” is also being developed, including initiatives and projects that combat anti-Asian racism and “promote the inclusion of members of the Asian community. ".
The task force will be co-chaired by Carol Chin, Principal of Woodsworth College, and Vikram Chadalawada, Deputy Director of Student Information Systems, Application Integration and Enterprise Solutions, and IT Services.
According to Chin, the group will "build on the experiences of previous anti-racism initiatives" — including that of the Anti-Black Racism Task Force.
"It's not just for the Asian community," Chadalawada said.
"It's also for anyone who interacts with members of the Asian community at the U of T - so it applies to all of us," he continued.
“We want to educate everyone involved in university life, and we hope this approach will open doors to deeper, respectful and more meaningful conversations,” he added.
The report will be delivered to university president Meric Gertler, along with vice president and provost Cheryl Regehr and vice president of people, equity and culture strategy Kelly Hannah-Moffat .
The objective is to complete and deliver it at the end of 2022.
In a message to the institution's community, some of whom will come to share their experiences, the leaders said improving inclusiveness was a "collective responsibility".
