What Can a Student Careers Internship Do for You?

Yuying He is an economics student who is undertaking a Student Careers Internship (SCI.) As the cost-of-living crisis hits, many students have no choice but to take up jobs. SCIs are paid positions within the University’s Careers Service, which you can complete whilst studying. Here’s Yuying’s experience!

My SCI Experience

I came across the SCI opportunities with the Careers Service shortly after I finished my Student Experience Internship (SEI) during the summer of 2022. As an international student who wanted to build a career in the UK, I understood the importance of having work experience on my CV. As my previous experience working as an SEI at the University was very positive, I decided to give it another shot by applying.

The application process was quick and simple; I was first required to submit a CV and a cover letter through CareerConnect. After that, I got shortlisted for a video interview and finished it within a week. A few weeks later, I was delighted to receive an offer for my current role as an SCI with The Careers Service. The team is supportive, and allowed me to work flexibly as each week’s rota is personalised to accommodate my availability and studies.

What I have learnt

So far, I have worked as an SCI for almost 9 months. This flexible work opportunity was the key to success for me to secure a full-time role after graduation. I also obtained various insights into the recruitment process in the UK job market. My main duties, such as CV and application reviews, have improved my organisational and communication skills. I have also developed other transferable skills such as time management, which is an invaluable skill to recruiters.

Additionally, working as an SCI provides a wealth of opportunities to participate in small projects such as delivering presentations, taking part in social media takeovers, and creating social media content. These optional projects allow me to collaborate with a diverse group of students and staff, which improved my teamwork skills. I also have access to a wide range of training, including workplace equality and disability awareness.

SCI Testimonial
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship in the Careers Service. Balancing a job alongside my studies has really helped my organisational skills. My internship also allowed me to gain experience in problem-solving, time management, and written communication. I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
