Police sealed off a major road in Manchester city centre and evacuated residents after a 'suspicious device' was found.

A large cordon was in place on Great Ancoats Street between Adair Street and Store Street. Pictures from the scene show a row of shops including the Ibis Hotel taped off.

Police said a suspicious device was found, with a cordon in place. GMP have since said the device 'has been assessed as non-suspicious'.

A spokesman previously said: "Police are currently in attendance on Longacre Street, Manchester City Centre, following the discovery of a potentially suspicious device. As a standard safety precaution, a 100m cordon is in place and nearby buildings have been evacuated. Road closures are in place on Great Ancoats Street and neighbouring side streets while an assessment is undertaken.

"Following an initial assessment the device does not look to be viable, although this needs to be confirmed. We are working closely with GMFRS to ensure this incident is dealt with quickly and safely. The public are advised to avoid the area."

They have since said: "Cordon now lifted in the city centre. Following an incident today where a suspicious device was discovered in the Great Ancoats Street area of the City Centre, we can confirm that the device has been assessed as non-suspicious. The road closures have been lifted."

The road reopened at around 1.30pm.
